NEWSLETTER NO 79 - OCTOBER 2016

Dear Member,

I’m finding this one of the most difficult newsletters I have had to write, as I have sad news to report.

Sally Hallworth died during the summer, she was a founder member of Woolston & District Horticultural Society.

In the early days Sally worked hard organising talks and trips out and set the high standards for the show’ which we have tried to keep to over the years.

Sally also got most of the trophies for the show and when we moved the trading hut from Green Lane to Woolston Hub, Sally did most of the organising to get it established.

Just a few weeks after Sally died, John Boyle passed away, John was one of the first members to join the society and supported our early events, in particular he enjoyed the car treasure hunts we used to organise.

John joined the committee and enjoyed working in the trading hut. He replaced the old metal shelving with the new wooden shelving and replaced the roof on the trading hut after the old one was damaged in a severe storm.

John finished working in the trading hut because of his failing health but he still continued to support us.

This will be the last newsletter I’m sending out.

At the AGM we said we would be closing the Horticultural Society at the end of the trading year in October. This was because of falling membership and much reduced sales in the trading hut.

We have given notice to Warrington Borough Council, who we pay rent to, and they will be collecting the keys for the hut at the beginning of November.

To allow us to clear the hut we are going to make Thursday 13th October our last trading day. Any stock left, will be taken to the allotment site at Battery Lane.

The allotment society are going to start a shop for the allotment members but they have said that anyone who is a member of our Horticultural society will be able to buy at the shop provided they have their membership card so please hang on to them after we have closed.

We have a few items of old stock, Phostrogen, Chempak, Baby Bio. If you can use any of these then come along in the next two weeks, while stocks last.

We are hoping that the show will keep going in Woolston Park. And we are trying to find other organisations who might be interested in taking this over.

All those who entered exhibits will be informed if the show is on next year and will be sent a schedule.

I would like to say a big thank you to all the members who have supported us over the years. and I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will be meeting you at next years show.
